Getting to Know Me: Activities

Most of us have a list of things we enjoy doing either moderately or considerably more than others. That list can be quite long and the activities can be categorized in many different ways. For example, favorite household chores vs. hobbies vs. physical activities…you get the picture. Here are some things I enjoy doing in no particular order.

Though we’ve only been married a little less than three years, I cannot imagine life without my Love. He is many things – some I knew I wanted and others I didn’t know I needed. Do we always get along? Haha, no. We are two broken sinners, redeemed, but still broken and in need of grace. Under a single roof that means there is potential for much strife. But we have chosen to love each other and we have chosen to put Christ at the center of our relationship and that is what carries us day-to-day in our marriage. We don’t complete each other – only Christ can do that – but we complement each other well and that is a blessing for which I hoped and prayed for a long time. Fun fact – we met on

Is there anything more fulfilling than being a mother? We have been blessed with two precious little people and I cannot imagine life with them. They are amazing. Before their births, I had no idea that loving another human this much was possible! All I have to do is hear their names and I am grinning like a kid on a super high. Being a SAHM is definitely challenging for many reasons, but it is something I’ve felt called to for a long time. There was a time – before I met my Love – that I began to doubt I would ever get the opportunity to be a wife, much less a mother. But I was reminded that God doesn’t put desires on our hearts that He doesn’t intend to fulfill and now here I am, a wife and momma. Little Man is currently 18 months and getting into everything! He shows no fear. He’s also mimicking us more and more and we’re taking advantage of that by attempting to teach him to sign. Little Lady is already three months old and showing intense interest in everything around her. I have a feeling that baby proofing the apartment again is in our not-too-distant future. I’m also step-mother to the Punkin who is 9 years old. She loves to draw and play with other kids. She has a beautiful smile and a tender heart. She is a people pleaser.

I’ve loved horses for as long as I can remember, but my family didn’t really start riding a lot until well after I graduated from college.  My Bella is a beautiful bay Missouri Fox Trotter standing between 15 and 16 hands. She loves to go and will do so at the slightest provocation. We’ve had many adventures together and I’ve only been pulled off once. I say pulled because it was a nasty vine hanging across the trail that I didn’t notice until it was too late…it’s a long story, but thankfully I’m all in one piece and here to tell it. Bella didn’t run off and once the stars had cleared, I was back in the saddle again. If boarding horses wasn’t so expensive in the city, I’d be riding as often as possible.

Speaking of physical activities…dancing is by far one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, it is also one of the things that I do less often than I used to before moving to the city, getting married and starting a family. Ballroom and country western dancing were a major part of my life for several years. Some weeks I’d be out dancing or at dance lessons almost every night of the week. I miss it! Not only is it fun, but it can be a great workout, too! (Have you tried Zumba? If not, you totally should!) If you were to ask which style of dance is my favorite, well, it’s hard to choose. It’s so much easier (especially here in Texas) to find places to dance country western than it is ballroom. In a ballroom setting, I enjoy them all, but the Latin dances are my first choice. At the end of the day, there’s nothing like the pretty feeling you have when dancing a waltz.

I put these two together because often they go hand in hand. They allow me to exercise the creative side of my brain as I try to make things that not only enrich my family’s life, but also the lives of others. Most recently I designed an adorable wedding shower invitation that the bride-to-be absolutely loved. The design process happened fairly effortlessly, the assembly process was a little more complicated, but the end result was fabulous. It blessed me twice because not only did I feel accomplished, but seeing the bride’s reaction was a joy! Some of my most-used tools for these DIY and craft projects include the Silhouette Cameo, a basic Brother sewing machine and the handy yet somewhat dangerous hot glue gun. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said “OW!” while using a hot glue gun.

These haven’t always been favorites, but over the last few years I’ve grown to really enjoy trying new recipes both savory and sweet. My mom, God bless her, has a pretty limited variety of foods and spices that she uses and so I grew up with a slim range of tastes and textures and, well, varieties of foods that I liked. This continued through college, but as a single woman living on my own this began to change and now, my husband stands hopelessly by as I use almost every mixing bowl and pot and pan just to make one dish. Okay, it’s not quite that bad, but sometimes it’s pretty close! He’s such a dear about it and, more often than not, he helps with cleanup (which, by the way, is definitely on the list of things I DON’T enjoy so much). When it comes to baking, cheesecakes are one of my favorites. More often than not, though, I’ll be making cakes or cookies…or muffins…or, well, pretty much anything.

Documenting life through pictures is one of my favorite things to do. Right now, at this moment, I have over 800 pictures on my phone. YIKES! I was given a new lens for my Canon DSLR for Christmas a couple years ago and I’m slowly learning to use it. Slowly….as in, most of the pictures I take with it end up blurry. Hopefully, one day, that will change! Lots of practice is the key…and learning how to effectively utilize the manual settings. It helps that I have some adorable subjects who don’t object to posing (or being posed in Little Lady’s case) while I practice.

This is one of my all-time favorite ways to relax. I get lost in a good book when I have the time. When I have the time…sigh. These days I’m most likely to fall asleep in the middle of the first paragraph, lol.

Fellowship with other ladies is important and valuable. Though we love them with all our hearts, it’s common knowledge that we need a breather from our husbands and children sometimes, amen? I’m blessed to have some dear friends with whom to do life.

These are my two favorite ways to exercise! Running is something that I didn’t enjoy doing until a few years ago and have gotten out of the habit of doing since I met my man. We had started to get back in the program together and then I got pregnant. So, that’s one of my goals for this year – to get back to the running shape I was in three years ago and conquer a 5k by the end of the year. Zumba, I loved from the first class. It incorporates my favorite Latin dances, so what’s not to love?! Part of our upcoming “Operation Project Motivation” starting on June 1 is getting back into Zumba and the habit of running.

These are all things I enjoy and some I can still do regularly. At this time in my life, my utmost favorite things involve anything that means spending time with my family.

What are some of your favorite activities?
